The short answer: at The EV MAN, fixed-price installation starts from $750 for a straightforward home install. That price is for the installation only. The charger itself is extra, and we'll recommend one to suit your car and budget, or install a charger you already have. The final installation price depends on your home, mainly how far the charger is from your switchboard and whether your switchboard has room for a new circuit.

What changes the price

• Cable run length. A charger mounted on the garage wall right next to the switchboard is the cheapest job. Long runs, double-storey homes and detached garages add cable and labour.

• Your switchboard. If it has spare space and modern safety switches, the circuit goes straight in. Older boards may need an upgrade first.

• Single-phase or three-phase power. Most Melbourne homes are single-phase, which suits a 7kW charger. Three-phase homes can run faster chargers.

• Mounting location. An internal garage wall is simplest. Outdoor pedestals or carports may need extra work.
