Do I Need a Switchboard Upgrade for an EV Charger?
Often not. Most newer homes, including those in Melbourne's new estates, can take an EV charger on the existing switchboard. Older homes are more likely to need some work first, and we can usually tell from a single photo.

Signs your switchboard may need an upgrade
Old ceramic or rewireable fuses instead of modern circuit breakers
No room for another circuit
Missing or limited safety switches (RCDs)
An old backing board, which in some older homes can contain asbestos and needs proper handling
A low main switch rating for the loads in your home
Why it matters for EV charging
An EV charger is one of the biggest loads in a home, and it can run at full power for hours at a time. Your switchboard and supply need to handle that safely alongside everything else, like ovens, heating and air conditioning.
Can a smart charger avoid an upgrade?
Sometimes, yes. Some smart chargers monitor your home's total usage and automatically slow down charging when other appliances are running. This load management can avoid the need for a bigger supply, though it doesn't fix an outdated or unsafe switchboard.
